About Our Camps
Our Drama Camps give participants a chance to experience theatre first hand through our tried and true method of creative drama activities and participatory games. Throughout the weeklong camp, The Junior Calithumpians are active - acting, singing and dancing - making “Act Now” not just a catchy title, but a promise. Campers get to enjoy a peek behind-the-scenes of the Calithumpians’ Theatre In The Park performances in Officers' Square and view the live lunchtime performances by the professional troupe. Various members of the summer troupe provide specialized short workshops on singing, dancing, outdoor games, and improvisation. Each week culminates in a short play written and performed by the camp participants. The show goes up on Friday at noon in Officer’s Square as a curtain raiser for the Calithumpians’ Theatre In The Park performance. In case of rain we perform in our rain location, The Fredericton Public Library.
Beginning in 2011, Calithumpians recognized the need for a program that would give local underprivileged children a chance to attend our summer drama camps on a waived fee basis. Because of a demand in the community, and because of the value our camps have in fostering creativity and confidence in youth, The Calithumpians Scholarship program was started in partnership with local businesses, and over the years more than 300 underprivileged kids have had the chance to become Junior Calithumpians. If you are a local business operator or private benefactor and you would be willing to sponsor a child or children, or if you are a teacher, parent, or guardian of a child or children who otherwise would not be able to participate in our program, please take a look at our Scholarship Page and contact us!
My son's week at the Act Now! Camp was the highlight of his summer. The creative energy in the camp is phenomenal. I arrived early to pick my son up just to hear their latest impromptu sketch. Their end of the week performance was flawless and exemplified how great the staff was with the campers in such a short period of time. I would highly recommend this camp to any other parent.
As a parent of children who attended the Calithumpians Summer camp I can attest that this camp is the most rewarding and fun camp. It's the kind of camp you keep returning to year after year. My eldest has done so, and as a result became one of the Calithumpians herself! My youngest who is now 12 can't wait to join up again.
I like that we can help create the play we are going to perform, that we are not just given a script and, everyday, we get to see the Calithumpians perform in Officer's Square.
